Bicyclists are required to obey the same traffic laws as vehicle drivers. Here is a list of things to remember before hitting the cycling trails.

Laws and Rules:

As a cyclist it is your duty to obey traffic signals, markings on pavement and any directions given by construction workers, police officers and detour markers.

Bicycles must be equipped with a headlight and rear reflector if you wish to ride in the dark. The headlight beam must reach 500 feet.

Always ride with the traffic flow. Never against traffic.

Know your hand signals and use them. Let drivers know what your are intending to do.

Wear a properly fitting helmet. Your safety is always at hand.

Be alert for cars, see and be seen. If possible make eye contact with drivers.

Wear light colored clothing, reflective material is the best to be seen day and especially at night.

Do not pass on the right side of a vehicle. Drivers are not looking to the right for bicycles.

It's your responsibility to be aware of any municipality ordinances for bicycles.

Always carry an ID with personal, medical and contact information.

Allow extra stopping time for the breaks in the rainy weather.

Lock your bicycle when parked. Keep a copy of the serial number in a safe place.

Ride with the buddy system, or let someone know where you are going ans what your route plan is.

Don't weave between parked cars. Someone may be pulling out that you don't realize.

When moving at the same speed of traffic, say in an intersection, ride in the middle of the lane.

Safety Checklist

Don't forget to prepare your bicycle for the upcoming season. This is important as to avoid accidents and mechanical breakdowns.

Tires:
Ensure that the tires are securely attached, properly adjusted, all spokes in place, and they should spin freely. Check that the tire tread and sidewalls are free of cracks, splits and excessive wear. Check for proper inflation.

Reflectors: All reflectors are adjusted in their proper place, clean and free of defects.

Breaks and Gears: Check that all cables move freely. Ensure that hand grips are secure and properly adjusted for the break tension and for gear shifting. Ensure that break pads are not worn.

Chains: Make sure the chain is the proper fit, free of rust, use oil, but not too much as too much oil will attract dust and dirt, which will shorten the life of your chain.

Handlebars and seats: Make sure you are comfortable with the handlebar adjustment and the seat height. Don't forget that all bolts should be tightened securely.

Just remember to always think before you ride, check the laws in your area and check the safety of your bicycle. Have a great ride!
