Bicycle Helmets — a Small but Important Investment

Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle. Eventually you will experience a fall and even the smallest thump to the head can bring devastating circumstances. Finding the right helmet is important and may take time. Don’t ride your bicycle until you purchase a helmet.

Purchasing a helmet doesn’t mean you go to just any old store and grab one off the shelf. There are many points that you need to consider in finding the right one for you to give you the best protection.

The best places to shop for a bicycle helmet is bicycle shops or a sporting goods store. They can help you with finding the helmet best for you. If the salesperson helping you seems unknowledgable about what they are doing, ask to speak to someone else. If they all seem unknowledgable move on to another store.

A good helmet may be more expensive but it is worth the investment. A helmet needs to fit well so if you have to pay a little extra for one that fits better, do it. A good fit means that the helmet should stay level on your head at all times. If you jump up and down or shake your head back and forth, the helmet needs to stay in the same spot. If it crooks to one side or to the front or back of your head, don’t buy it.

The helmet should touch your head all around and fit snugly, but not too tight. If there are any gaps in the helmet between the padding and your head this is not adequate protection. If you are unsure of this, stick your finger between the helmet and your head. If it slips in and you can wiggle it easily the helmet is too loose.

Make sure the helmet has a strong wide strap and an adequate buckle. The strap should fit snugly under the chin and the buckle should latch properly. Tug and pull on the strap and try to break the buckle apart. You should not be able to. Once the helmet is on your head no amount of tugging should pull the helmet off your head. It should stay directly level and in place.

Choose a helmet in a bright and reflective color so motorists will be able to see you. Your helmet should be vented sufficiently, but be aware and don’t purchase one with alot of vents. The more vents the less protected your head is. Do not choose dark colors, but if you do, buy some reflective tape and add to the helmet generously. Make sure the straps are wide. The straps will jostle around to easy if too thin. Do not purchase a helmet with unnecessary parts and pieces. They may be stylish, but they can snag on anything and cause you to fall. Make sure the helmet is adequately padded and is not too heavy for your head.

Bicycle helmets are important and necessary. If at anytime the helmet becomes loose and adjusting it doesn’t help, purchase a new one. If you do experience a crash and you have hit your head, purchase a new helmet. It’s better to be safe, than sorry.
